Police & Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger visited an innovative project providing support for disadvantaged young people within the East Cleveland area.
The Doorways scheme, which is based in Destinations Café in Saltburn, provides support for 13 to 25 year olds with issues of unemployment, homelessness, offending or drug and alcohol abuse.
The scheme aims to equip young people who often have complex social and emotional difficulties with the skills and confidence to improve their life chances and fulfill their potential.
John Pearson, who runs the project said: “We use an interactive programme called ‘The Hero’s Journey’ which uses myths, legends and movies to enable the young people we work with to successfully navigate change. By relating well known stories to their own life experiences we give them the tools to gain perspective on their lives and see that positive change is possible.”
Barry Coppinger said: “It is inspiring to meet people like John who have such a passion to change the lives of young people for the better. Everyone deserves a second chance in life and giving young people the confidence and tools to take charge of their lives and fulfill their potential is key to this”
